Ice should always be wrapped in about one layer of towel and never placed directly on the skin. Icing should be done once per hour at least 3-5 times per day.
Neck - 5-10 minutes
Middle back - 10-15 minutes
Lower back - 15-20 minutes
All other joints, including: elbow, shoulder, knees, etc. - 15-20 minutes
* Applying heat my help for muscle spasms in some cases. Quick tip: a hot shower is always better than a heating pack when heat is needed.
