Why are people fasting?

Fasting

Hello all! I am currently on hour 60 of a 72 hour  fast, so I thought I would talk a little bit about my experience and some fasting benefits or reasons.

Me, my fiancé, my future mother in law, and one of our best friends have been doing this fast together. So far we have lost between 7-11 pounds each in our 60 hours. We have also been hydrating like crazy!!

I would have to say hour 43 was the most difficult for me. It was mid afternoon at work and my typical snack time. Drinking water when feeling hungry really helped, along with staying busy! I experienced off and on hunger with my stomach growling at me from time to time. I was more tired towards the end of the day. I was LESS irritable (which I thought would be the other way around lol)!

While all 4 of us had different reasons for the fast, I want to explore some benefits from a religious standpoint and for health reasons.

Doing a fast for religious reasons: the thought behind this is to draw near to God. During this time you are surrendering yourself to God and listening for his direction. It is also about the determination to do Gods will.

Doing a fast for health benefits: the biggest benefit for doing a 72 hour fast is for autophagy. Autophagy is when the body gets rid of damaged or weak cells. A 72 hour fast can help with brain health, decreased inflammation, weight loss (burning fat for energy), and hormone balancing. This happens in 3 phases:

  1. Decreasing inflammation
  2. Increasing metabolism
  3. Autophagy

*This information so far has been for a 72 hour fast*

The other kind of fasting is the very popular Intermittent Fasting. While some of these benefits are the same I will outline a couple of the big ones again. Intermittent fasting is usually about 16 hours of a fast and eating your meals in the remaining 8 hours of the day.

Intermittent fasting can help to improve thinking and memory as well as heart health. Blood pressure and resting heart rate are the two heart benefits that come with this type of fasting. Intermittent fasting helps your body to burn fat while retaining muscle, and this is how it can help you to lose weight.

Both types of fasting have been researched for many years on the effectiveness. This blog is simply to provide information - not to give diet or weight loss advice. If you are 18 years or younger, pregnant, breastfeeding, have type 1 diabetes, or have an eating disorder PLEASE consult a doctor before starting a fast. Also if you have any questions or concerns, reach out to your doctor.

This fast was a very tough mental and physical task to complete. Will we do it again? Stay tuned! #YouDeserveToFeelGood #MahleChiropractic

Foot and Ankle Pain As chiropractors we work a lot with foot and ankle pain. This can include chronic pain, arthritis, sprained ankles, and more. Sometimes we check these joints to make sure that they are not contributing to lower back pain or the reason why a complaint might not be resolving. Let’s talk a little bit about some of the more common foot and ankle injuries. Please keep in mind that there are a lot more to be mentioned. If you think you have a foot/ankle issue please consult with your doctor. There are 3 types of ankle sprains that go from least severe to most severe. A Grade 1 ankle sprain is where the ligaments are stretched but have not torn. Grade 2 has a partial tear in the ligaments, and Grade 3 is a full tear. A lot of our patients come in with ankle instability or loss of mobility. This could be from previous injuries, or it could be how your body was developed. Do you have flat feet? High arches? Bowed legs? All of these things effect how your body functions. Lets talk a little about feet. I probably treat plantar fasciitis more than any other foot/ankle complaint. The plantar fascia is on the bottom of the foot and connects your heel to your toes. This fascia can become inflamed and as a result the body feels pain. Less commonly, but still prevalent, we see bursitis on the back of the heel which can interfere with your Achilles tendon. There are many bones, ligaments, and muscles included in the mechanics of the leg. That is also why your foot or lower leg complaint can be connected to your lower back pain and vice versa. Chiropractic care, as we mentioned in the first blog, is all about putting motion into your joints. In your foot alone there are 26 bones. Plus, the 2 bones that articulate from the lower leg. All of these bones form a joint, and all of these joints can be adjusted. Your part is next!! Home care and maintenance is a big part in decreasing your pain and improving your recovery. Stretching, strengthening, rolling - lots of work you can do at home. Make sure to remind your doctor to give you instructions for more that you can do on your own. I know I tend to get so excited to treat I forget to give follow up instructions. Please feel free to ask any further questions to your doctor. ***Also please note that this is an informational blog not to be used for diagnosing pain or dysfunction.***
